Position Description
The ARC (Access, Relevance, and Community) Initiative focuses on Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander students, populations that have traditionally been marginalized and underserved in higher education. Skyline ARCommunity Peer Mentors will be working as part of the Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) grant between Skyline College, San Francisco State University, College of San Mateo, and Cañada College.
Skyline ARCommunity Peer Mentors will work with existing learning communities such as Kababayan and emerging Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander student organizations to increase access, enrollment, and transfer pathways to San Francisco State University through community building, workshops, field trips, and other collaborative activities.
Peer mentors may be asked to:
- Serve as an embedded peer mentor/teaching assistant in the linked Kababayan Learning Community courses
- Serve as an embedded peer mentor/teaching assistant for the Kapatiran Seminar at Westmoor High School once a week
- Be knowledgeable about resources Skyline College has to offer
- Attend club meetings and serve as a liaison for other on-campus Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander student organizations
- Outreach to students to inform them about AANAPISI-related events, activities, and resources
- Plan, prepare, and lead outreach activities, including workshops and tabling
- Work with the Transfer Center to create and facilitate transfer workshops
- Assist with hosting events (cram sessions, academic workshops, Discover Kababayan, AANAPISI Day)
- Represent Skyline ARCommunity at statewide and national conferences, such as Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE), Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS), National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE)
- Reach out to Skyline ARCommunity mentees for important notifications through phone calls, text messages, and e-mails
- Maintain the Skyline ARCommunity Instagram account and post about AANAPISI-related events
- Provide general clerical support to the Skyline ARCommunity staff. This will include, but is not limited to, phone calls, text messaging, data entry, uploading, and creating documents and forms
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned
Requirements
- Responsible and reliable
- Strong sense of punctuality and meeting deadlines
- Able to work well independently and as part of a team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented and able to demonstrate strong organizational skills
- Familiarity with key campus software/websites: WebSchedule, WebSmart, Canvas, Google Suite
- Knowledge of relevant software, including Microsoft Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Google Workspace (Drive, Photos, Sheets, and Forms) and Adobe Acrobat
- Can support students from the office in-person, via Zoom and phone
- Proficiency in Calendly to schedule office hours with students
