The Learning Center Peer Mentor

Position Description

  • Provide regular support to assigned mentees for the academic school year
  • Schedule and facilitate individual meetings with mentees
  • Schedule check-in sessions with mentees to discuss any issues, questions, or concerns they have
  • Develop and track Action Plans for mentees to help guide activities and progress
  • Facilitate Workshops
  • Check email daily, and respond to coordinator and administrative staff emails within 24 hours
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of common campus resources and refer mentees as necessary
  • Submit daily reports detailing all peer mentoring work completed
  • Represent The Learning Center at campus and community events
  • Work with campus units to conduct outreach to incoming students
  • Attend training during the week preceding the start of each semester

Requirements and Desirable Skills

  • Mentors are obligated to report in-person for their shift
  • Must be a continuing student and have successfully completed a full academic year at Skyline College (2 semesters).
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 6 hours per week
  • Each shift must be a minimum of 2 hours
  • Maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA and be enrolled in at least 6 academic units
  • Ability to plan, organize, and execute events in collaboration with other mentors and campus units.
  • Must demonstrate respect for, and awareness of, the diverse cultures, languages and experience of Skyline College students.
  • Knowledge and understanding of following applications: Zoom, Google Calendar and Drive, and Canvas
  • Good written and oral communication, detail-oriented, and organized.
  • Excellent time-management and initiative skills, ability to maintain effective communication with Learning Center staff, and ability to effectively communicate with and assist students.
  • Ability to work well with students from diverse backgrounds, ability to be flexible and adaptable as needed for the position.

Hours: 6-8 hours per week
